Shadow Teacher for Special Needs Class

Role Summary
The Shadow Teacher provides one-on-one support to a learner with special needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum, participate in classroom activities, and develop socially and emotionally within the school environment. This role requires close collaboration with the lead teacher, special education professionals, and the learner’s family to create a consistent and supportive learning experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer individualized academic and behavioural support during school hours
- Facilitate the learner’s participation in classroom tasks and social interactions
- Implement strategies from the learner’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or support plan
- Monitor and document progress, challenges, and daily observations
- Assist with transitions between activities and environments
- Support the learner in developing independence and self-regulation skills
- Communicate regularly with teachers, therapists, and parents
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the dignity of the learner at all times

- Understanding of inclusive education and special needs support
- Patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence
- Ability to follow structured plans and adapt to changing needs
- Strong observational and documentation skills
- Effective communication with children and adults
- Basic knowledge of behavioural intervention techniques

- Calm under pressure and responsive to emotional cues

Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in Special Needs Education, Psychology, or related field
- Experience working with children with developmental, cognitive, or behavioural challenges
- First Aid and child safety training
- Familiarity with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, or other learning differences
- Requires flexibility and responsiveness to the learner’s daily needs

- Development of learner’s engagement and participation levels
- Progress toward IEP goals or developmental milestones
- Quality of collaboration with teaching staff and parents
- Consistency and professionalism in documentation and support
